LPA Grading Procedures for 4th Term

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are so grateful for your efforts as you continue to help your children learn at home during this unprecedented time.  We want to reiterate that our priorities are the same as yours, to care for the well-being of your children.  Please continue to communicate with your children’s teachers as we finish out the year strong.

In an effort to alleviate some of the pressure you might be feeling regarding grades, we have developed this plan, based on Davis District and other surrounding schools.  If you have questions about any part of this plan, please reach out to any of your teachers.

We will get through this together!

Grading Procedures

4th Term 2020

K-4 Grading Scale

Since K-4 has been grading on mastery all year, we will continue to grade students based on their demonstrated mastery of content. Priority will be given to progress demonstrated in Lexia and ST Math and/or Prodigy.

5-9th Grading Scale

  • Letter grades (A, A-, B+, B, etc.) will be awarded according to calculation methods and cut scores with a few modifications.

Modifications – 5-9th

  • No F grades will be awarded during 4th term 2020. Any grade that would have been an F will automatically be replaced with an I (incomplete).
  • Cut scores will be adjusted on a grade and department level.  Please work with your teachers to understand the adjusted grade distribution.

Modifications (9th Grade ONLY)

  • 9th grade students will have the option of requesting a P (passing) grade to replace a traditional letter grade (except F).
  • No F grades will be awarded during 4th term 2020. Any grade that would have been an F will automatically be replaced with an I (incomplete).
  • The table below identifies the grades a student may earn as well as the effect on graduation credit (9th grade) and GPA (term and cumulative).

Additional Information on P Grades (9th Grade ONLY)

  • Beginning May 11, 2020, P grades can be requested as a replacement for any grade (except F or I). Requests for P grades will not be considered prior to May 11, 2020.
  • Requests for P grades will be submitted by a student’s parent/guardian. A paper request form will be available in the school counseling office or on LPA’s website.
  • P grades requested prior to the end of the term will show on the 4th term report card.
  • After the end of the term, 9th grade students (ONLY) may work through the process for grade changes to replace a P grade with the appropriate earned letter grade. This opportunity will be extended through August 1, 2020.
  • If students or parents are concerned about scholarships, NCAA eligibility, or college admission requirements, they should consult a school counselor before submitting a request for a P grade.

Additional Information on I Grades (9th Grade ONLY)

  • I grades will be awarded instead of F grades for every class during 4th term 2020.
  • An I grade awarded during 4th term 2020 will not automatically convert to an F grade after a period of time. It will remain as an I on the transcript unless modified by grade change or grade replacement procedures.
  • 9th grade students may work through LPA’s credit remediation or grade change processes to replace an I grade with the appropriate earned letter grade or a P grade. This opportunity will be extended through August 1, 2020.

Citizenship

  •  No citizenship grades will be given during 4th term 2020.

Other Notes

  •  These grading requirements apply only to 4th term 2020.
