Legacy Preparatory Academy will be holding a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Contest on Monday, January 29, 2024, where participants will perform and be judged by a panel of judges. This contest will allow our students to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and what they can do to make a positive difference.   There will be one student winner per category.  There are 3 categories for the elementary students: K - 3 and 4 – 6th grades.

If students would like to participate, please do the following:

  • Fill out the form below and return it to the office by Wednesday, January 24, 2024.
  • Choose any portion/excerpt of a speech or letter from Dr. King. The excerpt must be consecutive lines from the same speech.
  • Memorize your speech (speech must be 1-3 minutes long).

Rules:

  • Your speech must be memorized.  You cannot use notes or cue cards during the contest.
  • Your speech must be no less than 1 minute long and no more than 3 minutes long.
  • You may deliver your speech in a language other than English.
  • You must provide one printed copy of your speech in English for the judges with this entry form. You do not need to provide a copy of the whole speech, but only the portion you will be reciting. Please put your name on the top right corner of the page, along with the name of the speech if it's not already on it. Highlight the starting point of your speech.
  • Use the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech Contest Rating Form as a rubric to better prepare to deliver a successful speech (contact the speech coordinator if you did not receive a copy of this form).
