School Opening MOVED TO AUGUST 26, 2020

Hello parents,

Thank you for the support you have given LPA during the challenging past five months.  Together we have handled and will continue to handle the demands we are faced with to protect everyone as we continue to educate your children during the most unusual of circumstances.

Legacy has a new challenge that will be common to every school district in the country as soon as they attempt to open their doors.

Last week, one of our non-teaching support staff tested positive for Covid-19.

We are working directly, hand-in-hand, with the Davis County Health Department, (DCDH). Legacy’s official Point of Contact with DCDH is Chris Jacobs. DCDH is very supportive of Legacy’s cautious and conservative approach and the high priority we have placed on safety. To that end, everyone who was in contact with the affected employee has been notified and is now at home in quarantine as a precautionary and preemptive measure to ensure the health of everyone else at school. Thus far the employees who were exposed are showing no symptoms.

To err on the side of caution, to continue to keep our teachers safe, and to avoid altogether any chance of exposing your children, we are delaying the start of school one week until August 26, 2020.

BE ASSURED: The only teachers and staff who will be on campus between now and August 26th will be those who were NOT traced to have had close extended contact with a colleague that has COVID-19. Moreover, those who were traced to have had contact -- even if they are symptom-free -- will NOT return to school until they have satisfied all Davis County Department of Health quarantine criteria for a safe return.

In the meantime, the majority of faculty and staff who were not exposed and who are not affected by the precautionary quarantine will continue their preparations. The buildings will be cleaned and sanitized, and teachers be able to safely carry on as planned. For instance:

Kindergarten-9th Grade:

  • Distance Learners and In-Person Learners, grades Kindergarten-6 might be asked to come in to complete the ‘beginning of year’ testing
  • Kindergarten will be better able to group their classes into two groups, giving parents more notification on what room they will be assigned to
  • Teachers will finalize plans on how to teach via hybrid classes as well as live stream/zoom classes, where possible
  • Staff will work out the final kinks in technology to improve distance/blended learning activities
  • This will give our staff time to continue planning and preparing lessons to support the distance learning portion of our plan
  • Teachers can allow more time to delve into our new Canvas platform to help with both in-person and online students
  • Our technology just arrived for our live streaming/zoom calls. Teachers will be able to work with and understand how to run those classes with ease
  • Disclosures for junior high school classes will be emailed out giving families enough time to collect notebooks, pencils and other needs for our August 26 opening
  • Special Education students might be asked to zoom in or have in-person assessments

Administration:

  • Will be updating plans to meet the latest health department guidelines
  • Will complete our documentation of high-risk individuals for Covid-19 notifications
  • Will send out final parent/student contracts for expectations

I encourage our parents to visit our webpages frequently and follow our social media for up to date and accurate information (links below). There may be incorrect information being disseminated which leads to unnecessary confusion.  Our priority is to keep everyone safe while not making life more difficult for our parents.

As we re-open, we will keep you updated. Thank you for your continued support and positivity as we strive to do what is best for our students and employees during these challenging times.

Sincerely,

Nyman Brooks
